Past, Present, Future Tarot Spread: Free 3-Card Reading

The Past, Present, Future tarot spread uses three cards to show how a situation may have grown over time. You can see what shaped it, where it stands now, and which way it might be heading. It suits questions about love, work, family, or anything you keep thinking about.

How this spread works

To use the Past, Present, Future spread, start with one situation you want to understand better. Keep it specific: a friendship that changed, a job you feel stuck in, a home you are thinking of leaving. Take a slow breath, hold the question in mind, and draw three cards. Lay them from left to right: past, present, future.

Read each card on its own first. Then look at the three as one line. Notice what changes from left to right and what stays the same. A shift in mood, a repeated suit, or a figure facing a certain way can all point to something in the story. Reversed cards may show where energy feels blocked or turned inward.

The future card is not a fixed outcome. It shows where things might go if the path stays as it is now. If you don’t like what you see, that is useful too: it gives you a chance to ask what you could do differently. Take what fits and leave the rest.

The positions

  1. I
Past. The Past card shows what came before and still shapes the situation today. It can point to an old choice, a habit, a feeling, or an event you may not have fully let go of. Look at it as the root of the story.
  2. II
Present. In the Present position, the card reflects where you stand right now. It may show your mood, what you are dealing with, or what holds your attention. Ask yourself which part of the card feels familiar in your life today.
  3. III
Future. The Future card points to where things might be heading if nothing changes. It is a possible direction, not a promise. You can use it to notice what you want to grow and what you might choose to do differently from here.

Why this spread

I like this spread because its shape is so simple. Three cards in a row turn a confusing moment into a story with a beginning, a middle, and a possible next step. It shows how one thing grew out of another, which can make the present easier to understand. It suits any question about something that has been changing over time.
